I don’t know about you, but I have a love/hate relationship with series.
Sometimes, I can’t get enough of a story line and waiting on the next book or the next episode becomes pure torture. Right now, on TV, I’m totally hooked on the shows Billions and The Get Down. Polar opposites, they are both incredibly well-scripted and well-filmed. If you haven’t watched them yet, then I’ve just made your weekend TV plans a lot more exciting.
Now about the hate part. Sometimes, I feel like series are created to make a good thing last longer than it should, think Divergent or Hunger Games where book 2 and 3 hold nothing of the magic present in Book 1.
When I sat down to write the sequel to The Masterpiecers, I contemplated writing “what happens next,” but then I was visited by my muse—in the form of my husband—on a beach in Mauritius (My muse takes me on holidays. Lucky me, I know), and while sipping on a shaded orange cocktail, my muse came up with a brilliant idea. And that brilliant idea, made more brilliant by the shaded cocktail I was ingesting, became the very foundation of The Masterminds. It’s a sequel that can be read as a standalone.
