1 – Charming Man & Polka-dots
Once upon a time, one of Paris’s most eligible bachelors arrived at a dinner party to celebrate a friend’s engagement. Because cell phones didn’t exist, he missed the telegraph (kidding, it was probably a call on the landline) that the party had been postponed. Not wanting to waste a perfectly nice evening, he drove to the City of Light’s fanciest nightclub, a discotheque filled with red velvets, glamorous people, and heady disco music.
That was the fateful night Charming Man laid eyes on Polka-dots, a twenty-year-old Scandinavian beauty with golden hair and emerald eyes. She sat next to a fashion photographer whom Charming Man knew well. When the photographer ventured toward the bar, Charming Man followed him and inquired about the woman in the red and white polka-dot dress. He learned she was a twin, a darling, and not quite single but not quite pleased with her current relationship.
That was all the encouragement Charming Man needed. He ordered a bottle of champagne and walked it over to Polka-dots. He smiled down at her. She smiled shyly up at him. Then he took a seat beside her and conversed with her until she granted him her contact information.
The next day, he had a gold necklace with her astrological sign delivered to her doorstep and a note asking her to dinner. Shocked, she stuffed both in a drawer. When he called her landline, she did not pick up. When he called the following day, Polka-dot’s twin took pity on Charming Man and accepted a date on her sister’s behalf.
That night, he drove up to her apartment building in his gold Mercedes. Necklace swinging against her beating heart, she descended the stairs and slid into the passenger seat.
They had dinner and drank champagne. Three years later, they were married, and within a decade had four lovely children.
Their third was extra-lovely. 😏
And they lived happily ever after.
This isn’t the start of a new romance novel, although it very well could be. This is my parents’ love story…the one that led to me being born 33 years ago (today). Dad, thank you for being persistent. Mom, thank you for taking a chance.
